The Massacre that Shook the Empire follows writer and journalist Sathnam Sanghera as he investigates the Amritsar massacre of 1919, in which British Indian Army troops, on the orders of a British officer, opened fire on Indian civilians killing hundreds of them. Sathnam’s research leads him to an uncomfortable realisation about his relationship to Britain and its imperial past and his journey shows how history isn’t just about the past, but about now. As part of the campaign to get the British government to apologise for this atrocity we showed the film at the House of Commons. Unfortunately the world is still waiting for that apology.
